In a significant and symbolic step, the Karnataka High Court has officially directed that portraits of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, be displayed in all court halls across the state. This includes the High Court Benches in Bengaluru, Dharwad, and Kalaburagi, as well as all district courts in Karnataka.
The Background
This decision follows a series of requests from members of the public, lawyers, various organizations, and a formal communication from the State Government. Responding to this, a full court of the High Court passed a resolution on April 26, agreeing to honor Dr. Ambedkar’s contribution by displaying his portrait prominently in court halls.
Subsequently, on June 19, the High Court issued two official circulars to implement this decision. These circulars direct the Additional Registrars General of the High Court to make arrangements to place Dr. Ambedkar’s portrait in every court hall of the High Court at its three locations and in all District Judiciary courts across Karnataka.
What the Circular Says
The circular clearly states:
“It is hereby directed to cause display of the photograph/portrait of Bharata Ratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Father and Architect of the Constitution of India, at a prominent and suitable place in all the Court Halls of the District Judiciary of the State.”
This means every courtroom in Karnataka will now prominently honor Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy—a move that many believe is long overdue.
Why This Matters
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was not just the principal drafter of the Constitution; he was also a legal scholar, social reformer, and a voice for the marginalized. His contributions laid the foundation for India’s democracy, justice system, and the idea of equality under the law.
Displaying his portrait in courtrooms is a powerful gesture—one that reinforces the values of justice, equality, and constitutional morality that Dr. Ambedkar stood for.
A Step Towards Inclusion and Respect
This move has been widely welcomed by civil society groups, legal professionals, and citizens across Karnataka. Many see it as a step toward acknowledging and respecting the historic role Dr. Ambedkar played in shaping modern India, especially in the legal and constitutional framework.
Conclusion:-
The Karnataka High Court’s directive to install portraits of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in all court halls is not just a ceremonial decision—it is a tribute to the enduring principles he enshrined in the Constitution. As these portraits are put up across courtrooms, they will serve as daily reminders of justice, equality, and the power of the Constitution in ensuring a fair society for all.
